Who is legally on the contract
A quote tells you little about the company standing behind it, so start with the legal entity. GJW Direct writes through Ripe Insurance Services Limited, Hiscox through Hiscox Insurance Company Limited, Chubb through Chubb Limited and Coverdrone through Coverdrone Limited. The badge on a listing page and the name on your schedule are not always the same company, which is why the contract name is the one worth reading first.
Age follows from that. Chubb dates from 1985 and Hiscox from 1901, both long-established names. Coverdrone comes later, founded in 2007, and Abiki Brokers, whose legal entity is Abiki Brokers SA, starts from 2023. A longer history does not make cover better and a shorter one does not weaken it, but it changes the questions you ask about capacity to pay a claim.
The regulator and its reference
Safety of the money rests on two things: the entity, and the regulator that watches it. GJW Direct lists a Financial Conduct Authority reference of 313411, and Hiscox lists a Prudential Regulation Authority and Financial Conduct Authority reference of 113849. Read both on the regulator's own register rather than on a sales page.
A provider trading outside the UK needs the same check in its own market. ERGO NEXT records a home market of US, so the register there is where you confirm who is authorised. Treat an entity name with no regulator reference beside it as work still outstanding, and ask for the number before cover is bound.
Home market and the rulebook that follows
Coverdrone lists GB as its home market, GJW Direct lists GB, and Gowrie Group lists GB while contracting through Brown & Brown Insurance Brokers (UK) Limited. A country code can cover very different operations, so the entity name still does the heavy lifting.
BizCover (Australia) is registered in AU under BizCover Pty Limited (ABN 68 127 707 975), founded in 2008. BizCover NZ sits in NZ under BizCover Limited and also dates from 2008. Same founding year, separate companies, separate registers and a separate tax number in the Australian entity, so a quote never travels across markets.
Fees and the account type they belong to
Fees are the figure readers weigh hardest, and a single headline premium is the least useful number on a quote. A price attaches to an account type and to a fixed set of covers, so ask each provider to break the quote down by account type and check that the same sections are priced on both sides of the comparison.
The Business insurance ranking gathers comparable price signals in one place, a row per provider. Where a quote bundles several sections, split it against the Professional indemnity and liability insurance and Public liability insurance rankings so the price of each part stays visible. Any fee charged separately belongs in the total, not in the headline.
The name of the legal entity also shows where a provider sits. A broker, a bank and an underwriter answer to different incentives, and ABN AMRO Bank N.V. is a bank rather than a standalone insurer, so the cover sits inside a wider relationship. Name the account type on the quote before you name a price in a comparison.
Support once the policy starts
Account handling is where policies are won or lost, and support reach is easy to compare. Coverdrone offers email, chat and phone, the widest set in this group. BizCover (Australia) offers phone, email and help centre and BizCover NZ offers email, phone and help centre, each covering a phone line, an inbox and a help centre.
GJW Direct lists chat and help centre, which puts live chat at the front of the conversation. ERGO NEXT lists help centre alone, a single route when a claim needs speed, while Hiscox offers phone and help centre and AXA Business Insurance offers phone and help centre. Gen3 Marketing offers email and phone. How many ways you can reach a human is worth more than how quickly a page loads.
The order to work through
Run the checks in a fixed order: legal entity, regulator reference, home market, support routes, then price for your account type. It takes a few minutes and it removes most renewal surprises.
Then read what other buyers report. The Coverdrone and ERGO NEXT reviews cover very different models, a broad provider with a wide support set against a single-market online service. The BizCover (Australia) and BizCover NZ reviews show how far the market changes the answer, and the Abiki Brokers review is the one to read if you are weighing a broker over a direct insurer.
